2026 Canada Thoughts
THE BIG PICTURE: They are going to make changes in 2027. They are not going to make changes in 2027. The racing is good. The racing is bad. At this point, we'll just look forward to Monaco.
EVENT: The Formula 2 sprint race was held in front of packed grandstands, which has never happened anywhere else in the past. Granted, it took place between the F1 Sprint and Qualifying, but no fans were taking that opportunity to go to the bathroom, grab some food, or check out the souvenirs. Sure, this was the first time F2 was in Montreal, but the Canadian fans love racing at all levels. And they saw a banger of a race.
TRACK: How these new regulations would play at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve was a huge question mark. The answer is, pretty darn good!
SPRINT SHOOTOUT: Russell redeems himself, but Antonelli is right there, the McLarens continue to knock on the door, Hamilton shows his love for this track, and Gasly is caught out.
SPRINT: A thriller with none of the frontrunners having an easy time as all were kept under constant pressure.
SPRINT START: Russell gets a superb start, Antonelli does not lose a position, the Ferraris are not as impressive this time as only Hamilton gains one spot, while the McLarens hold their own.
QUALIFYING: Russell once again puts his stamp on Montreal with a clutch final lap, Norris continues to beat out Piastri, Hamilton makes a mistake, Verstappen just nips Hadjar, Lindblad is strong, and Gasly lost his qualifying mojo.
RACE: Whatever you think of the new regulations, the yo-yo effect, the mushroom mode, and the artificial passes, if your heart wasn't pumping with excitement in those first 30 laps, maybe tiddlywinks is more your style.
START: Amazingly, the intermediates actually worked at the start, allowing Norris to leap past the Mercedes. Antonelli gets his second solid start on the weekend to beat out Russell, and Hamilton gets the Ferrari advantage to get past Piastri.
ANTONELLI: A champion tends to have everything go their way. And everything is definitely going Kimi's way.
RUSSELL: George needs to confer with his buddy Lando to get some tips on how to make a comeback against an upstart teammate.
MERCEDES: They sure have their work cutout for them trying to keep their two drivers in check. It's bound to get even more testy.
HAMILTON: Lewis has never been from the simulator generation, so his constant ignoring that tool, especially for this weekend, yet still having a steller weekend, should be no surprise.
LECLERC: On the flipside, Charles just could not get on top of the car which his teammate so loved.
VERSTAPPEN: Russell dropping out and McLaren doinking themselves helped secure a podium, but Max did show some speed in the race.
HADJAR: And Isack is back to being relatively close to Max.
COLAPINTO: A second straight solid weekend. Maybe Franco is finally showing the promise he displayed in his early Williams days.
GASLY: While Pierre is now playing "catch up."
LAWSON: Liam needed this result.
LINDBLAD: While Arvid missed a great opportunity.
SAINZ: A surprise points finish.
ALBON: Done in by a groundhog.
BEARMAN: Still outshining Ocon.
MCLAREN: What. Where. You. Thinking?!
INDY 500: Due to the threat of rain, the drivers were going gangbusters in the last third of the race. And then when it appeared he had no momentum and waited too long, Felix Rosenqvist pulled off the move of the century to become the third Swede to win.
F2: In a thrilling reverse grid sprint race, Noel León pulled off a bold, clean pass to become the first Mexican winner. The feature race saw an epidemic of crashes and reliability issues. Norwegian Martinius Stenshorne was left standing at the end for the win.
F1 ACADEMY: Brit Alisha Palmowski absolutely dominated the weekend. She set a series record margin of victory in the opening race of 10.119 seconds. Then broke that in the feature race at 10.955 seconds, to take the points lead. In between, German Mathilda Paatz claimed the reverse grid race win on the last lap when the leader was handed a penalty.
WORD OF THE WEEKEND: Prizefight.
STAT OF THE WEEKEND: 4 -- Kimi Antonelli became the first driver in history to take his first four career wins consecutively.
HISTORICAL STAT OF THE WEEKEND: Sixty years ago this weekend, McLaren made their F1 debut at the 1966 Monaco GP. It was a single car entry for Bruce himself and only lasted nine laps due to an oil leak. The M2B chassis was designed by Robin Herd with a Ford 3.0-liter engine where it qualified 10th.
TWEET OF THE WEEKEND: From @Felipemmeira:
Exactly 12 years ago, Jules Bianchi was making history in Monaco, by managing to place the worst car on the grid, the Marussia, in 9th position #F1
QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND: Oscar Piastri summed up McLaren's tire strategy, "If the rain had been a little more abundant, we would have looked like heroes. But it wasn't, so we looked like idiots."
QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND RUNNERUP: F1 TV commentator Jolyon Palmer on the sprint start, "Couple of weeks off for Mercedes and they've finally learnt how to get off the line!"
SCHEDULE: Now we finally get to Monaco for a first ever June date. And Deep Throttle will be late on the Thoughts. [Slacker!]
