2024 Great Britain Thoughts
THE BIG PICTURE: Remember how not too long ago, everyone was saying turn off your TVs, this season is another repeat of dominating predictability? Now, we have no idea who is going to win the race not just going into a weekend, but going into the race itself. We suspect those TV ratings have shot right back up...
EVENT: There has been a British GP every year there has been a World Championship. Only Italy can say that, too. Not Belgium, Monaco, or anyone else.
TRACK: Any track in England would be great just because of the ever changing weather.
QUALIFYING: A British 1-2-3 at the British GP for the first time ever, Verstappen lost his speed when he damaged his floor, Hulkenberg is the fastest Ferrari powered qualifier, Albon gets into Q3, Leclerc struggles in Q2, and to no one's surprise Perez chokes again in Q1 ingloriously beaching it.
RACE: That race went by so fast because it was so much fun to watch.
START: It was the after-start where Verstappen got Norris around the outside, the Mercedes boys behave thanks to a strong start by Russell wherupon Hamilton eventually tucks in behind, Albon gets bounced around, Leclerc jumps three spots, while Hulkenberg losses three.
HAMILTON: Lewis is still the darling of the British crowd. When he passed his fellow countryman for the lead, it generated the loudest cheers of the weekend. Until he took the checker.
RUSSELL: An ironic water problem when there was so much water coming down.
MERCEDES: Making this a four horse championship race.
VERSTAPPEN: Nearly stole this race with brilliant tire strategy, like he's done recently.
RED BULL: We're confused. Do they have two drivers? Seriously. Do they?
NORRIS: Another potential race win missed out on.
PIASTRI: Also, potentially the race winner.
MCLAREN: It was their race to lose. And ... well ... they did.
HULKENBERG: What a fantastic performance by Nico (and Haas for that matter) with a second consecutive sixth place finish.
HAAS: Solid signing of Oliver Bearman, even if Haas swore off rookie drivers. But Bearman is no Mick Schumacher or Nikita Mazepin.
STROLL: Beat Alonso yet again. Hmmm...
ASTON MARTIN: A massive turnaround from the past few races. But is this just a one time deal?
ALBON: Solid performance by Alex.
SARGEANT: For Logan, too.
TSUNODA: Back to beating Ricciardo.
RICCIARDO: Back to looking mediocre. Sigh...
LECLERC: Did Charles make a devilish deal with the racing gods? After his fairy tale home win at Monaco, he has finished 19th (DNF), fifth, 11th (after first lap puncture), and 14th while twice failing to get to Q3.
SAUBER: Still zero points.
F1 MOVIE: Though the action scenes are scintillating, based on some of the dialogue in the teaser, we are afraid. Very afraid.
F2: This time, Italian Andrea Kimi Antonelli finally wins, also in the reverse grid sprint race, but in dicey rainy conditions. For the feature race, Frenchman Isack Hadjar messed up the start from the pole, but managed to work his way back for this third feature race win (should have been four if not for the bizarre Monaco ending) to take the points lead. BTW, Hadjar is a Red Bull driver. Just saying...
F3: The sprint race was moved from morning to early evening due to heavy rain. Brit Arvid Lindblad eventually won. The feature race came down to a tire choice lottery as the rain came, went, came, and went. Lindblad pulled off the first ever GP3/F3 double win.
WORD OF THE WEEKEND: Hammertime.
STAT OF THE WEEKEND: 9 -- Lewis Hamilton breaking the record for most wins at the same grand prix. Michael Schumacher has eight at the French GP. Hamilton also has eight at the Hungary GP.
HISTORICAL STAT OF THE WEEKEND: The last time British drivers qualified 1-2-3 was the 1968 South African GP, which took place on January 1, so qualifying was actually in 1967 on December 31. The Lotus-Ford team took the front row with Jim Clark leading Graham Hill. Jackie Stewart (Matra-Ford) was third. The front row order stayed the same for the race allowing Clark to break Juan Manual Fangio's win record at 25. Stewart's engine expired, handing the final podium spot to fourth starter Jochen Rindt (Brabham-Repco). It would be Clark's last F1 race before he was killed in an F2 race at Hockenheimring.
TWEET OF THE WEEKEND: From @MattP1Gallagher, he wrote, "Perez in the gravel..." then showed a picture of Daniel Ricciardo with a huge smile.
QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND: Lewis Hamilton finally relieved breaking the winning drought, "I have been waiting for this. Geez!"
QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND RUNNERUP: Under the category of didn't you realize this before you extended Perez's contract, Christian Horner said, "It's something we're acutely aware of, that to win the constructors' championship you need both cars scoring."
SCHEDULE: Everyone needs a break, but the way the season is now playing out, we don't want a break. But, we'll then get another back-to-back with Hungary and Spa coming up.
