2016 Canada Thoughts
THE BIG PICTURE: We said it's a very, very long season. The championship battle is back on.
TRACK: Fast. No downforce. Lots of lockups. A few wall bangs.
EVENT: Another home run.
QUALIFYING: Hamilton does it again, Rosberg just misses with one mistake, Vettel makes his presence known, Kimi not so much, and a McLaren once again makes it to Q3.
RACE: A strategy affair not an on track affair, which made it "cerebrally" exciting.
START: Vettel waxes the field, Hamilton helps his cause by tapping Rosberg wide, and everyone else stays clean.
HAMILTON: Another victory "gifted" to him due to another team screwing up. But when Lewis is on a roll, he is on a roll.
ROSBERG: What must be going through Nico's mind?
MERCEDES: They kind of just brushed aside yet another moment of contact between their drivers.
VETTEL: This time, Sebastian truly had the speed.
RAIKKONEN: This time, Kimi truly did not.
FERRARI: This time, Ferrari truly screwed the pooch on strategy for both their cars.
BOTTAS: A much needed podium for Valtteri.
WILLIAMS: A much needed podium for Claire (despite her OBE).
VERSTAPPEN: A fantastic job of clean racing keeping Nico Rosberg behind him in the waning laps.
HULKENBERG: Every time Nico is counted out, he comes back with a strong drive and convincingly beats his teammate. The problem is, it's too inconsistent.
SAINZ: Carlos started 20th and finished ninth in the points, ahead of his teammate.
KVYAT: Daniil started 15th and finished 12th out of the points, behind his teammate. Well, at least he didn't hit anyone this time...
ALONSO: Back to a miserable race for Fernando.
BUTTON: So much for McLaren's reliability improvements.
WEHRLEIN: Beat a Sauber. Nasr no less.
WORD OF THE WEEKEND: Cold.
STAT OF THE WEEKEND: 0 -- The number of full safety car periods. Remember, this is Canada, essentially the home of the F1 safety car.
HISTORICAL STAT OF THE WEEKEND: A few drivers have won the Canadian GP twice in a row. Only one driver won it three times in a row -- Michael Schumacher in 2002-2004 in a Ferrari. However, a Schumacher won the race five times in a row, when brother Ralf won in 2001 in a Williams-BMW and Michael in 2000 with Ferrari.
QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND: Sebastian Vettel joking about the seagulls which cost him his large lead, "It wasn't fair. I brake for animals, Lewis doesn't!"
QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND RUNNERUP: Kimi Raikkonen upon being told to take it easy to save fuel while two cars were on his tail, "I cannot take it easy and keep two cars behind."
SCHEDULE: You have to feel for the teams. They have to travel across nine time zones in less than one week. And then get the pleasure of performing under another repressive regime.
