2020 Hungary Thoughts
THE BIG PICTURE: It sure seems like nobody has anything for Mercedes. But, it's not their fault. It's the fault of Ferrari wasting time and resources last year to come up with a cheater system instead of improving the engine, Red Bull not living up to the promise they displayed last year, Renault still being ... well ... Renault, with Racing Point of all teams being the only (not quite enough) serious contender.
SILLY SEASON: One week after Alonso announces his return, the hottest silly season rumor has Vettel going to Racing Point which will be Aston Martin by 2021. So, is Stroll (yeah, like his father is going to fire him) or Perez (a shame) out of a ride?
EVENT: Some fans got to watch the race from private property overlooking the track. Though some binoculars were probably needed.
TRACK: Not quite the passing of last year, but still more ability to pass than usual.
QUALIFYING: The threat of rain never materializes, Hamilton doesn't care either way, nobody can touch the Mercedes, both Ferraris finally make it to Q3 but they can't do any better than the third row, both Williams make it to Q2 for the first time in nearly two years, and all four Ferrari customer cars are mired in Q1.
RACE: With the changeable conditions, the first quarter of the race was interesting behind Hamilton. After that, not so much thanks to the predicted rain going south of the track.
START: Wheels spin everywhere, Hamilton sails away, Bottas jumps then stops then goes, Stroll takes advantage, Verstappen awards his crew with an outstanding jump, and the Ferraris slither around.
HAMILTON: This race is the reason Lewis is unbeatable over the course of a season.
BOTTAS: This race is the reason Valtteri can't beat Hamilton over the course of a season.
VERSTAPPEN: From zero to hero. What a boneheaded move. What a drive.
ALBON: Better in the race than qualifying, but Alexander has to be careful not to have Red Bull management lose faith in him.
STROLL: Rock solid all weekend, as Lance is making a statement, nepotism or not, he deserves to stay on the team.
PEREZ: Sergio picked the wrong weekend to be off his usual self.
RACING POINT: Do they have any shot at closing the speed gap to Mercedes to actually challenge for a win, straight up?
VETTEL: Well, Sebastian beat his teammate...
LECLERC: Charles never liked his car.
FERRARI: They were lapped. Both cars. Lapped.
SAINZ: Gave it to his future teammate. Carlos, you sure you want to trade orange for red?
MAGNUSSEN: Got two points. Then got only one.
HAAS: Great strategy call nearly negated by a rules infraction.
NORRIS: Poor start then clogged up in pitlane traffic ruined Lando's race.
OCON: Has not looked good at all this season against his teammate. Not the way to convince Mercedes management to stop drooling over Russell.
LATIFI: Paid the greatest price in the pitlane chaos.
GASLY: Every driver has a weekend like this. Nothing went right and Pierre will gladly forget it.
F2: The best Ferrari Academy driver is a Russian -- Robert Shwartzman. Last year's Formula 3 champion won his second feature race in a row going from 11th to first, taking the championship lead.
F3: American Logan Sargeant only managed a sixth (third before a penalty) and fourth, but his consistency keeps him second in the points.
WORD OF THE WEEKEND: Scramble.
STAT OF THE WEEKEND: 20 -- Number of minutes it took the Red Bull crew to fix Verstappen's car on the grid for a job which normally takes 90 minutes. And they completed it with just 25 seconds to spare.
HISTORICAL STAT OF THE WEEKEND: Lewis Hamilton tied the F1 record for most wins at a single track at eight (in 14 years) with Michael Schumacher who won eight times (in 13 years) at Magny-Cours. Schumacher never won more than two consecutive times during the record while Hamilton has won at Hungaroring the past three years.
QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND: Max Verstappen obviously pleased and thankful for the amazing job his crew did, "You are legends. Thank you so much."
QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND RUNNERUP: Lance Stroll thrilled with his third qualifying performance, "The car was on fire today."
SCHEDULE: Finally a week break and then another doubleheader, this time at Silverstone.
