2014 Brazil Thoughts
THE BIG PICTURE: In the end, the championship would have been decided in the last race, double points or not. Sure, double points could have an effect on how the driver's title is decided, but the real reason for double points -- to extend a championship to the last race -- is not realized. Ultimately, the whole gimmick needs to be driven into a gravel trap.
EVENT: Whether it's the World Cup or in a few years the Olympics or a F1 race, nobody knows how to party like Brazilian fans.
QUALIFYING: Rosberg gets the pole again but this time he tops all practice sessions, second row should be renamed the Williams row, and Button beats out Ferrari and Red Bull.
RACE: It was looking like a riveting battle for the lead until you realized there was no way Hamilton was going to make a chancy move, so the director was correct switching to the Ferrari battle.
TRACK: Small, old, and great.
START: Clean and straight as Rosberg is perfect while Vettel slides back two spots.
ROSBERG: A superb weekend all around for Nico who refused to concede the title just yet.
HAMILTON: Just think if that runoff was a gravel trap...
MERCEDES: Good luck trying to manager your drivers in two weeks.
MASSA: Whether you're a Felipe fan or not, you had to smile seeing him bask in the glory of his home crowd ... and probably laughing inside at Ferrari.
BOTTAS: Yeah, seatbelts are kind of important in racing...
WILLIAMS: Despite double points, Williams virtually has third place locked up over Ferrari.
BUTTON: A great race for Jenson, though whether it means he stays at McLaren probably doesn't matter.
MCLAREN: Make up your minds already.
ALONSO: Ditto.
VETTEL: Sebastian beat his teammate! Sebastian beat his teammate! Sebastian ... what's that? ... oh ... never mind.
RICCIARDO: A rare DNF for Daniel.
RED BULL: They have definitely taken over the Whiners Championship trophy Ferrari won last year.
RAIKKONEN: Kimi, where have you been all year?
FERRARI: Finally, the intra-team battle we've been waiting for. A little too little, too late.
ERICSSON: Last week, Marcus signed with Sauber to run in 2015.
NASR: This week, Felipe signed with Sauber to run in 2015.
VAN DER GARDE: Giedo says he already has a contract with Sauber to run in 2015.
SUTIL: Adrian says he still has a contract with Sauber to run in 2015.
SAUBER: Is it any surprise this team is run by a lawyer?
MARUSSIA: "She's dead, Jim." Or is she...?
CATERHAM: Everybody should throw a few bucks to the crowdfunding effort just to stick it to Bernie and the big teams.
BERNIE: Let us get this straight. Asking fans to fund your team is holding out begging bowls? But, whoring yourself to sponsors is okay? Accepting payments from no talent drivers is okay? Funding the entire sport with fans buying tickets and watching on TV so sponsors can justify their ROI is okay? But those same fans giving money directly to a team is morally degenerate behavior? Is your middle name "Hypocrite"?
HORNER: Ditto. I hate to break it to you Christian, you have no right to even suggest how a team should be allowed or not allowed to raise money. Even if that means is illegal. You are not a lawmaker.
WORD OF THE WEEKEND: Crowdfunding.
STAT OF THE WEEKEND: 17 -- The number of points which separates the contenders.
HISTORICAL STAT OF THE WEEKEND: The last time Ferrari won in Brazil was with Felipe Massa in 2008, which was also the last F1 race Massa won. Which of course, was the famous or infamous (depending on which side you were on) title decider lost by Massa by one point when Hamilton passed Glock for fifth place on the final corners of the last lap to secure the championship.
QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND: The only chance Rosberg has is for Hamilton to finish no higher than third, so naturally Rosberg is a huge Massa fan, "I need to motivate Felipe to relax well before Abu Dhabi and have a stunning weekend to finish second!"
QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND RUNNERUP: Not that it matters anymore, but the last straw for Alonso had to be when Ferrari sent his car out unprepared for Q1, "Ay ay ay ay! Why do I start in qualifying with low battery? How is this possible? How?"
SCHEDULE: Abu Dhabi should never be the last race of the season. Double points or not.
