2009 Europe Thoughts
THE BIG PICTURE: The Concord Agreement has been signed. All is right with F1. Until the next crisis which you know is just around the corner...
EVENT: Another venue where fans don't seem to give a hoot. Thanks Bernie.
TRACK: It certainly is an interesting layout. And, it's fast especially for a street circuit. But that's about it.
QUALIFYING: The old order continues to get restored.
RACE: The strategy saved this race. Watching Hamilton and Barrichello, McLaren and Brawn match wits was the only drama of the day. Of course, McLaren's pitstop mistake sure made a big difference in heightening that drama.
START: Typical. A few cars crashed. A few passes were made.
BARRICHELLO: Finally, Rubens was able to do exactly what his team told him to do, ripping off qualifying-like laps which he has been unable to do in the past. A Schumacher-like performance. A well deserved win. A very popular win.
BRAWN GP: Lately, the fastest driver is not the championship leader. What does the team do now in the last six races?
BUTTON: Terrible start. Terrible race. Just how long can he continue like this?
HAMILTON: Lewis and McLaren are officially back. Germany and Hungary were no flukes.
MCLAREN: Here's stating the obvious -- horrid pitstop.
KOVALAINEN: Outdone by the elder Finn.
RAIKKONEN: Now carrying the torch alone for Ferrari, Kimi drove well.
BADOER: Now we know why there was so much protest when Luca was named as Massa's replacement. However, we never expected he would be this bad. We were truly embarrassed for him.
ROSBERG: At this stage of the Williams car, Nico wound up where one would expect.
ALONSO: The hometown boy was fairly quiet, barely giving his fans anything to get excited about despite having a decent weekend.
WEBBER: Mark had the advantage to gain some points and then lost it.
KUBICA: Robert's services will be highly sought after.
HEIDFELD: Nick's as well.
BMW: Another one bites the dust.
GLOCK: It appears Timo is the favored son, and Trulli will be sent on his way.
GROSJEAN: It now makes sense Renault replaced Piquet with Roman.
ALGUERSUARI: Bourdais got sacked for this sort of performance from Jaime?
VETTEL: Yet another DNF!
SCHUMACHER: Even if he had a broken neck, Michael would have done better than Badoer. In the end, his comeback attempt was much ado about nothing.
MASSA: Great to see Felipe's recovery going so well. However, it makes no sense to try and return this year. Rehabilitate 100% and come back strong next season.
WORD OF THE WEEKEND: Inspirational.
STAT OF THE WEEKEND: 100 -- The number of victories Brazilian drivers now have in F1.
HISTORICAL STAT OF THE WEEKEND: Emerson Fittipaldi set the stage for Brazilian drivers, notching the country's first F1 victory in the 1970 United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen. It was Fittipaldi's fourth F1 race.
QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND: It has to be Barrichello's words: "I dedicate this to Brazil, but also to a special one, for Felipe."
QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND RUNNERUP: Hamilton gracious in defeat: "We win and we lose together."
SCHEDULE: Starting with Valencia, F1 finishes the season with seven races in a 10 week span. It's gut check time for many down the stretch. What better place to continue than a gut check track like Spa?
