2025 Spain Thoughts

THE BIG PICTURE: As we predicted, the flexi wing saga was one of the biggest much ado about nothings in racing history. The FIA allowed the tail to wag the dog, overreacted which is typical of them, all for nothing to change. Other than a bunch of money burned in a pit.

EVENT: Spain has always had the reputation of loving MotoGP more than F1, ever after Alonso came around (though it did get better). But, it's hard to argue the massive crowds and enthusiastic fans who show up at Barcelona.

TRACK: The problem here is that every team has so much data with all the testing done on this track that very few setup mistakes are made. Thus, the race tends to be a processional affair.

QUALIFYING: Piastri turns an epic lap snatching pole from Norris who was no slouch while Verstappen can't overcome his car this time. Russell resumes excellent qualifying, Leclerc gets out early so Hamilton beats him. Sainz can't get out of Q1 while Albon does. Yet again, Bortoleto beats out Hulkenberg. Tsunoda pulls a Lawson, qualifying last.

RACE: Despite what we said above, the race turned out okay with some hard nosed midfield battles, an interesting strategy twist to keep an eye on, and tempers making things come alive at the end.

START: Picture perfect Piastri, Norris is a bit slow off the line allowing Verstappen to get by, Russell is not bad but both Ferraris still get by him, and Albon's woes begin.

PIASTRI: Like a metronome.

NORRIS: Lando needs to look in the mirror and ask himself, "Am I championship material?"

MCLAREN: They told everyone flexi wings were not the secret sauce to their speed. They continue laughing at all the other teams flailing with their complaints.

LECLERC: Took advantage of the safety car, slapped on some softs, and made mincemeat of Verstappen.

RUSSELL: He seems to have a knack for getting under Verstappen's skin...

HULKENBERG: Nico, in a Sauber no less, passed Hamilton in a Ferrari.

HAMILTON: Lewis was passed by Hulkenberg, in a Sauber no less.

HADJAR: It's expected now that Isack will have a solid finish in the points.

ALONSO: It took his home country to reverse the Alonso luck to finally score some points, the longest wait in a season since Fernando's rookie year at Minardi.

VERSTAPPEN: Here we go again. Petulant little crybaby who can't handle when things don't go his way.

LAWSON: Liam's performance didn't yield the result, because hs barely missed the pit entrance when the safety car came out.

BORTELOTO: Gabriel really deserves to be rewarded with some points.

TSUNODA: Looking like another F1 career being destroyed by Red Bull.

RED BULL: Why even bother running a second car? Seriously. Just spend the budget cap money on optimizing the main car, because that second car, regardless of the driver, hasn't had one iota of ROI in any area for two years.

PEREZ: Hey guys, remember me? Even I did better than anyone has this year. Heck, I won some races.

ALBON: Destroyer of front wings.

STROLL: Talking about petulant crybabies, or more like spoiled rich brat. Wonder what the apparently new injury really is and how long it could potentially keep Lance out.

F2: There is no mandatory pit stop for the sprint race, but with a late safety car, Dutchman Richard Verschoor did anyway from 10th spot, and then stormed through the field with new soft tires to take the win. The next Red Bull hope, Brit Arvid Lindblad, went from pole to victory, surviving the mandatory pit stop.

F3: Chaos at the start caused a lengthy safety car period in the sprint race allowing sixth starter, Portuguese Ivan Domingues, to pick up the win. The feature race saw pole sitter and points leader, Brazilian Rafael Câmara, win easily.

WORD OF THE WEEKEND: Petulant.

STAT OF THE WEEKEND: 1 -- The number of points Max Verstappen is away from getting a one-race ban through the Austrian GP.

HISTORICAL STAT OF THE WEEKEND: As Madrid is due to come on to the schedule next year, the first Spanish GP in the modern F1 era was also on a street circuit. In Barcelona, no less. The wide Pedralbes street circuit in 1951 saw Juan Manuel Fangio win his first world championship in an Alfa Romeo taking the race victory.

TWEET OF THE WEEKEND: From @TroIISports on the late race safety car strategy call:

Red Bull is the new Ferrari

#F1 #SpanishGP

QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND: Lando Norris in the cooldown room after seeing the Max Verstappen and George Russell incident, "I've done that before in Mario Kart."

QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND RUNNERUP: Lewis Hamilton, on the flexi wing saga, absolutely nailed it, "What a waste of money! Just literally changed nothing."

SCHEDULE: The last time we'll see Canada in June. Also, will we see Lance Stroll in a car or in a cast?
