2011 Singapore Thoughts
THE BIG PICTURE: Well, the championship is not quite clinched. There's quite a fight for second place amongst the next three competitors. The silver lining? We can now see drivers go for broke to win races.
EVENT: The more we see of Singapore, the more we start pushing the traditional great European events behind this Grand Prix as a must visit race destination.
QUALIFYING: Per the season's script, Red Bull's domain.
RACE: Like the last race, all the excitement, and there was plenty of it, occurred behind the leader.
TRACK: For a street course with very little straightaways, a lot of turns, and physically tough, it is surprising how much the drivers like it and how racy it can sometimes be.
START: Webber doinks it again, Hamilton pays for the Aussie's balk, Alonso gets a lightning start again, Rosberg gets away with one, and most importantly, Vettel does exactly what he needed to do.
VETTEL: You can put it in cruise control now, Sebastian.
WEBBER: Mark made not one, but two hair raising passes on Alonso.
RED BULL: Just how will the rest of the field catch you next year?
BUTTON: Once again, Jenson is rewarded by taking care of his tires and staying out of trouble.
HAMILTON: Lewis can take some lessons from his teammate. Just how many cars, walls, sand traps do you plan on encountering this year?
MCLAREN: On the cusp of knowing what it takes to catch Red Bull.
ALONSO: Once again, willed his Ferrari to a near podium finish.
MASSA: This time his finish did not do Felipe's drive justice. He drove hard, aggressive, and quick, but foiled by his arch nemeses.
FERRARI: Will be working on next year's car. They may need more time than that as word from Maranello is a complete redesign is on the table.
DI RESTA: A fabulous drive for this rookie who will soon become a much sought after driver.
SCHUMACHER: Michael, just what were you thinking? Maybe, it's time to retire ... oh, wait, you already tried that...
PETROV: Not the kind of weekend one needs when trying to keep his seat.
SENNA: Bruno didn't exactly do much better for a miserable Renault weekend.
KOBAYASHI: How not to take the chicane during qualifying...
WORD OF THE WEEKEND: Almost.
STAT OF THE WEEKEND: 1 -- The number of points Vettel needs in the next five races to win the World Championship.
HISTORICAL STAT OF THE WEEKEND: Not a stat this time, but a historical video documentary of the first Singapore Grand Prix in 1966. Note the feature Formula Libre race mixes formula cars with sports cars.
QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND: Felipe Massa about Lewis Hamilton and the altercation between them after the race, "My thoughts are that, again, he cannot use his mind - even in qualifying."
QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND RUNNERUP: Not related to F1, but we couldn't pass on this great quote from the Bucks County Courier Times, "Danica Patrick is proof that people with no exceptional talent can be financially successful. Look at Snooki, who has no real talent; she is making millions."
SCHEDULE: Off to Japan, where Kobayashi is already planning a lot of activities around the recovery effort.
