2014 Abu Dhabi Thoughts
THE BIG PICTURE: In the end, after all the controversy of new regulations, double points, the sound of the engines, and tires, it came down to racing. And that's what racing is all about.
EVENT: Let's be blunt. Abu Dhabi should not be a season finale. And definitely not a double points race. Sheesh!
QUALIFYING: Rosberg makes one last gasp at snatching the championship. No surprise -- Williams takes the second row. And Red Bull are naughty little boys.
RACE: The race, and thus the title, did not become anticlimactic when Rosberg starting suffering mechanical problems. The race became anticlimactic before Rosberg got to the first turn.
TRACK: For a track that typically has no decent action, it produced a lot of interesting dices. That has been a theme this year.
START: Hamilton pulls off perhaps the greatest in your face start in F1 history.
HAMILTON: He clinched the championship with a world class drive.
ROSBERG: A gentleman in defeat.
MERCEDES: They pull the sweep. Is this the beginning of a dynasty?
MASSA: Felipe kept getting stronger and stronger as the season went on. He probably can't wait for 2015 to begin.
BOTTAS: Valtteri is in the same boat, eager to get right back in the car.
WILLIAMS: They already have the Mercedes engine. The already have a decent car. They obviously have two capable drivers. A few more design tweaks, and who knows?
RICCIARDO: Daniel finishes the season the way it started -- thoroughly trouncing his four-time world champion teammate.
VETTEL: Sebastian finishes the season the way it started -- embarrassed by an upstart.
RED BULL: Reading what they illegally did to their front wing, places them in the extreme cheater category. If they were in NASCAR, Horner would be suspended for many races.
BUTTON: Showed the world of F1 what he is capable of. Now, it's out of his hands.
MAGNUSSEN: Though, overall, Kevin had an impressive rookie year, he seemed to fade in the last few races.
MCLAREN: Make a freaking decision!
ALONSO: An era ends. An era that fell short.
RAIKKONEN: Kimi needs to turn it around next year, or his reputation will be blemished forever.
FERRARI: Now, they hire a marketing guy to run the team. Enzo must be spinning at high RPMs in his grave.
FORCE INDIA: They did everything they had to do to try and pass McLaren. The gap was just too much.
VERGNE: Took it to his old teammate to try and prove his point. It may have been too little, too late.
LOTUS: Perhaps it's fitting their long relationship with Renault came to an end in a flaming heap of engine parts.
CATERHAM: Hey, look who came back.
STEVENS: Didn't totally suck.
WORD OF THE WEEKEND: Hammer-time.
STAT OF THE WEEKEND: 2 -- The second World Championship for Hamilton. The first Brit to do so since Jackie Stewart.
HISTORICAL STAT OF THE WEEKEND: 1967 -- The last time Ferrari, McLaren, and Williams did not win a race. Williams didn't even exist then. Ferrari finished fifth for constructors with a bunch of third places their best race result. McLaren finished 10th by only finishing two out of the 11 races. Brabham-Repco took the manufacturers title, winning four times, with their driver, Denny Hulme, sweeping the championships. Lotus-Ford (4), Cooper-Maserati (1), Honda (1), and Eagle-Weslake (1) also won races.
QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND: Lewis Hamilton showing his maturation as a driver as he starts to concentrate on just the title, tells his team, "I'm not racing Massa anymore."
QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND RUNNERUP: Nico Rosberg, obviously disappointed as he started falling through the field with his electronic problems, tells his team, "Just get me in the top six or eight ... whatever..."
SCHEDULE: Get rid of double points and make sure all the teams return, and let's get the 2015 season going.
