2013 Bahrain Thoughts

THE BIG PICTURE: Yes, Vettel ran away with it, but many felt Alonso could have contended for the win had he not run into DRS problems. The bottom line, despite the current points situation, this still could be a fight to the end between Alonso and Vettel.

EVENT: Once again, another Grand Prix in a country that a) doesn't give a crap about F1, b) nobody shows up for, c) is a political and human rights mess, and d) is only on the calendar because they pay garbs of money to Bernie.

QUALIFYING: Rosberg puts in a perfect lap, but Force India is the talk of the session.

RACE: Fantastic!

TRACK: Thanks to forgoing the soft compounds, the track did not destroy the tires.

START: Rosberg becomes super blocker, Alonso is super aggressive, Vettel quickly rights the situation, and Perez foreshadows his race.

VETTEL: Back to his old dominating ways.

WEBBER: Hate to see what you're like changing lanes on the highway...

RED BULL: Gaining their stride much earlier than they did last year.

RAIKKONEN: Another podium finish for Kimi. And once again, rightfully, he was not satisfied with any step but the top one.

GROSJEAN: Romain got a new chassis and it showed. With parts destined for Spain, watch out.

DI RESTA: So close yet so far for Paul's first podium finish.

SUTIL: Adrian is apparently going for the hard luck award this year...

FORCE INDIA: It's been said many times before, but we'll say it again -- is Force India on the verge to joining the elite?

HULKENBERG: Must be kicking himself for leaving Force India.

ROSBERG: Faded a-w--a---y.

MERCEDES: Has qualifying pace but not race pace.

PEREZ: Don't hit your teammate! He took the get more aggressive message a bit too far. But, this is what McLaren is paying him for.

BUTTON: It's not like Jenson is totally innocent in his career with passing maneuvers...

ALONSO: Perhaps the drive of the race with the comeback he had to make after two successive pit stops and not being able to use DRS the remainder of the race. Oh, on the cool off lap, the DRS worked perfectly...

MALDONADO: Went off again, but got to finish the race this time.

CATERHAM: Have they leapfrogged Marussia in the battle of the backmarkers?

FIA: One more time -- what possessed you to change telemetry software companies?

ROSSI: A podium finish in Alexander's GP2 debut. Nice job!

WORD OF THE WEEKEND: Repeat Podium.

STAT OF THE WEEKEND: 2 -- The number of times the hardest compound tire has been used with Vettel winning them both, the number of pit stops Alonso made to deal with the DRS jamming, and the number of flat tires Massa suffered.

HISTORICAL STAT OF THE WEEKEND: Did you know that when Bahrain was originally bidding for a Grand Prix, which they got in 2004, three other Arab countries were also? The United Arab Emirates did finally get one at Abu Dhabi in 2009. The other two were Egypt and Lebanon. Lebanon?!

QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND: Jenson Button on his teammate, "That is something you do in karting, and normally you grow out of it."

QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND RUNNERUP: Mark Webber on the ridiculous row caused by a photo of him and Alonso having dinner, "You know the drivers can go out and socialize! There is no need for all that paranoia. If that's the biggest subject, you guys [the media] are in trouble to be honest."

SCHEDULE: Another three week break and then the first part of the European season starts in Spain.
