2009 China Thoughts

THE BIG PICTURE: Despite Flavio Briatore's snobbish, elitist, unsporting, sore losing comments, having the F1 power structure turned on its ear is exactly what fans like to see every once in a while.

EVENT: How can you not like an event that lines up dozens of gorgeous Asian women for the drivers to walk through on their way to the podium? Ahhhhhh.

RACE: Despite another rain race, this one wasn't as exciting as previous rain races (though still with more moments than a usual dry race). Perhaps because the conditions were consistent throughout the race.

TRACK: There's so much runoff area, it almost encourages drivers to not care about finesse and control.

START: No doubt, a rolling start was the only way to go.

VETTEL: Gives Toro Rosso their first win doing so in the rain. Gives Red Bull their first win doing so in the rain. Can Force India borrow Sebastian the next time it rains?

WEBBER: Overshadowed by his teammate, Mark also drove a great race in difficult conditions for his best finish ever.

RED BULL: Unlike Toro Rosso's win last year, Red Bull was also the fastest car in the dry. This could develop into a very interesting season.

BUTTON: Settled for what he could get.

BARRICHELLO: Another excellent rain performance with the fastest lap of the day.

BRAWN: A chink in their armor? They could not get the tires to work right in the rain.

KOVALAINEN: Heikki didn't just complete a lap, he finished a whole race! What amazing achievement will he perform next week?

HAMILTON: Lewis, if it takes you 3-4 times to pass the same car, maybe, just maybe, you are doing something wrong staying in front of them. Just a hunch...

MCLAREN: Some gains were made. Don't count out the silver brigade just yet.

GLOCK: We aren't going to mention anymore how well Timo did in the rain again. We won't. We promise.

ALONSO: So much for that front row starting spot...

PIQUET: It appears to be pretty evident that Nelson will not finish the year out in an F1 car. The only question is, who will replace him?

BUEMI: Another fine weekend by the rookie.

BOURDAIS: Very well may suffer the same fate as Piquet.

TRULLI: An unintended mating victim.

KUBICA: Robert, there are easier ways to get up close and check out the controversial diffusers on the Toyota.

SUTIL: A good run quickly turns into disaster, leaving Force India once again without a single point in their history.

HEIDFELD: Another 11th place starting spot.

FERRARI: If they decide to scrap this season and concentrate on next year's car, following last year's example of Brawn nee Honda and Red Bull, the prancing horse may be unbeatable in 2010.

BRIATORE: The date-a-supermodel-a-month plan has taught you to whine and cry with the best of them. Leave your crocodile tears in the bedroom where they belong, and not at the track where real men are not afraid of competition.

WORD OF THE WEEKEND: Ruling.

STAT OF THE WEEKEND: 0 -- the number of points for Ferrari through the first three races. It's also the number of laps Ferrari, McLaren, BMW, and Renault have led this year.

HISTORICAL STAT OF THE WEEKEND: Vettel may have done it twice, but Sir Jackie Stewart gave three constructors their initial win: Matra (1968), March (1970), and Tyrrell (1971).

QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND: Sebastian Vettel stating his obvious preference: "Second time now in the wet I have won a grand prix. Now we can have some more rain."

QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND RUNNERUP: Count Sir Frank Williams as another person sick and tired of Briatore's foaming at the mouth ravings: "Flavio would not recognize a diffuser even if it were stuffed with money."

SCHEDULE: Off to the F1 hotbed of Bahrain with their throngs of racing fanatics...
