2014 Singapore Thoughts

THE BIG PICTURE: The fight for the Drivers' Championship starts NOW. It's a five race shootout.

EVENT: Singapore is proof it is possible to create a new classic event amongst the modern day fly away, cookie-cutter schedule.

QUALIFYING: Ricciardo nearly steals Mercedes' thunder while getting the loudest cheer, Hamilton does steal Rosberg's thunder, and Ferrari rips Raikkonen's thunder away.

RACE: The anticipated Mercedes duel fizzled immediately, but the safety car messing up Hamilton's strategy added some drama while the fight for second was fun to watch.

TRACK: It's at night, so that trumps the fact it's a street circuit.

START: Hamilton has clear sailing, Alonso "cheats" his way to second but gives it back quickly, Vettel is the old Vettel, and Raikkonen is strong.

HAMILTON: When he was forced to put the bit between the teeth, on old tires no less, he did just that. It was a championship drive done in a Schumacher-like style.

ROSBERG: Devastating.

MERCEDES: If it wasn't for such a superior car, Mercedes would lose the Constructors' title simply due to their reliability issues.

VETTEL: This time, Sebastian definitely drove a better race than his upstart teammate.

RICCIARDO: But still a fine race by Daniel in his own right considering his mechanical issues.

RED BULL: Will be very interesting to see how Red Bull plays a factor in the championship battle between the Mercedes drivers.

FERRARI: Luca goes away and the Scuderia has a pretty good weekend...

WILLIAMS: Not their type of track, but they didn't lose too much ground, thanks to...

MASSA: ...Felipe who grabbed as many points as he could while...

BOTTAS: ...Valtteri lost a bunch with a flat on the last lap.

VERGNE: A strong race by Jean-Eric with scintillating late passes who quieted some of the Kvyat talk ... for the time being.

KVYAT: Braved difficult conditions.

PEREZ: That is the definition of shatter.

FORCE INDIA: Now they are ahead of McLaren.

MCLAREN: While McLaren falls to sixth!

MAGNUSSEN: The literal definition of hot seat.

MALDONADO: Another weekend. Another crash. At least he finished the race.

GROSJEAN: Losing his cool, and rightfully so, over a loser car.

GUTTIERREZ: Losing his cool, period.

SAUBER: Another miserable weekend in a continuous downhill slide.

KOBAYASHI: Well, that was a long race...

FIA: Answering a question no one even came close to asking.

RADIO: Is it just us, or did the radio communications all sound just the same as before, with just as much "driver coaching" as always?

WORD OF THE WEEKEND: Electronics.

STAT OF THE WEEKEND: 100% -- The percentage of Singapore Grands Prix where the Safety Car was deployed.

HISTORICAL STAT OF THE WEEKEND: Only three drivers, all world champions, have won the Singapore Grand Prix in its seven year F1 history -- Sebastian Vettel three times, and Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton twice each.

QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND: More like the shout of the weekend when Rosberg reacted to losing the pole to Hamilton by seven thousandths of a second, "DAMN IT!" We think the shout was a lot worse when he sat idle on the starting grid...

QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND RUNNERUP: Romain Grosjean displaying his anger when his car let him down in qualifying, "I cannot believe it. Bloody engine, bloody engine. We break our balls for this?"

SCHEDULE: Do we have to wait two weeks for this championship fight to begin?
