2014 Spain Thoughts
THE BIG PICTURE: The problem with hoping for teams to catch up to the leaders with improvements made over a long break is it is dependent on the ignorant assumption the leaders are going to spend the break at the local pub guzzling down pints of Guinness laughing at their competitors.
EVENT: The organizers want to rename this the Barcelona Grand Prix because apparently Barcelona has better marketing cachet than Spain. Good luck with trying to get that one by the FIA...
QUALIFYING: Mercedes one-two (shocking!), Hamilton beats his teammate (shocking!), and Maldonado crashes (shocking!).
RACE: An intriguing race if not a very exciting one with a wake up call in the last few laps.
TRACK: For a track with long straights, why is it so difficult to pass?
START: Hamilton wins the race, Bottas channels his teammate, Grosjean smokes his tires, and Maldonado crashes again (shocking!).
HAMILTON: Why does Lewis seem to have such weak character? Whether he's winning or losing, dating or breaking up with Nicole, or walking or leashing Roscoe, he always seems so insecure.
ROSBERG: Speaking of insecure, Nico is going to acquire one heck of a complex if he keeps getting beat by his teammate.
MERCEDES: How many different ways can you say "domination?"
RICCIARDO: Gets his first "official" podium. This time, Daniel gets to keep it.
VETTEL: Finally, a drive worthy of a four-time champion. Sebastian may have been the best driver in this race.
RED BULL: Are losing their wings.
ALONSO: Had to work this time to beat Kimi.
RAIKKONEN: Finally a worthy drive with the Scuderia.
FERRARI: Well, at least they are ahead of Force India now...
BOTTAS: Clearly the best driver on Williams and probably will bring them their next victory.
MASSA: Was Felipe in this race?
WILLIAMS: Continue to make strides.
GROSJEAN: An excellent drive by Romain who put a much improved Lotus into the points for the first time this year.
PEREZ: More points.
HULKENBERG: More points.
MCLAREN: Forget Ferrari. McLaren is by far the biggest disappointment per dollar spent on the grid.
KVYAT: Outshining his teammate.
VERGNE: The unluckiest guy in F1 this year.
MALDONADO: <shakes head>
STEPNEY: Say what you want of Nigel, he didn't deserve to go so young.
WORD OF THE WEEKEND: Repeat.
STAT OF THE WEEKEND: 4 -- and counting.
HISTORICAL STAT OF THE WEEKEND: This was Lewis Hamilton's first Spanish GP win, but he is the ninth Brit to take this race. British drivers won six years in a row -- Mike Hawthorn in 1954, then the race was not held until 1967 when Jim Clark won. Graham Hill took it in 1968 followed by three straight wins by Jackie Stewart. James Hunt won in 1976, Nigel Mansell in 1987, 1991, and 1992, Damon Hill in 1994, and Jenson Button in 2009.
QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND: Fernando Alonso describing the struggles Kimi is having, "Generally, I always go faster than my teammate."
QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND RUNNERUP: Nico Rosberg on how many laps he needed to pass Hamilton, "I think one more to be honest." He seemed to have forgotten Bahrain when he had plenty of laps and couldn't get by.
SCHEDULE: Anything can happen at Monaco. So, maybe Mercedes will get beaten. And maybe Deep Throttle will win a Pulitzer.
