2013 Korea Thoughts
THE BIG PICTURE: Moving Korea to the spring giving the promoters just 6-7 months to sell tickets to a populace that doesn't buy them with a 12-month lead up, can only mean one thing...
EVENT: ...Korea, we hardly knew ya...
QUALIFYING: Vettel again, Mercedes first row again, Grosjean outdoes Kimi again, and Sauber shines again.
RACE: Once again, the end of race battles for back of the pack positions was the highlight of the day.
TRACK: The drivers love it. Too bad the fans don't give a crap.
START: Vettel fantastic again, Grosjean gives it to Hamilton, and Massa screws up Gutierrez.
VETTEL: No doubt, Sebastian is motivated by goals. And for him, a lot of those goals is racking up records, like yet another grand slam performance. How else can you explain the fastest and second fastest lap when his right front tire was perilously on the verge of failure?
RAIKKONEN: Kimi awakes from his recent funk and works his magic.
GROSJEAN: Romain got the podium he deserved this time, but it should have been second.
HULKENBERG: If Nico does not have a ride next season when all these unproven young "talents" buy their way in, it shows what is very, very, very, very wrong with Formula 1. Very, very, very, very wrong.
HAMILTON: Lewis' first lap cost him the race.
ALONSO: Fernando could win the next three races with Vettel failing to finish, and the Spaniard would still be in second place.
MASSA: A lame spin.
FERRARI: Don't look back. Mercedes is only one point behind.
ROSBERG: The sparkler.
SUTIL: The igniter.
PEREZ: Turning a round tire into a square tire in one easy lock up.
WEBBER: Talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time. First, Mark comes out of the pits behind Perez just in time for the exploding tire, causing a puncture when his team no longer had fresh tires. This all put him in the "perfect" place for Sutil to practice his bull spearing technique.
DI RESTA: Another race. Another DNF.
MCLAREN: Slow again.
SAUBER: Amazing what an influx of money can do.
RICCIARDO: Shined until his car let him down.
VERGNE: Lackluster throughout the weekend.
FIRE TRUCK: WTF? Did Korea hire the Indy car safety truck driver?
DANGER: Two racing incidents over the weekend nearly turned non-drivers into fatal statistics. In the American Le Mans Series race at Virginia International Raceway, a Porsche nearly went into a workers' stand and then into a TV cameraman's stand while literally riding on top of a tire wall. Then, Dario Franchitti blew a hole in the fence, injuring 15 spectators with debris as well as suffering some serious injuries himself.
WORD OF THE WEEKEND: Right front.
STAT OF THE WEEKEND: 13 -- The total number of laps which Vettel has not led in the history of the Korean Grand Prix (that would be four years).
QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND: Lewis Hamilton when told to be patient about the graining on his tires, "I've been through the graining phase, and they're dead."
QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND RUNNERUP: Gary Anderson on BBC, "There can only be ten cars in the top ten."
SCHEDULE: Wonder who will finish second in Japan.
