2015 Austria Thoughts

THE BIG PICTURE: As is typical in F1, when everyone, including those harebrained folks at Deep Throttle, say there is not going to be a championship fight ... a championship fight breaks out.

EVENT: Looked like another successful Austrian GP ... at least in the general admission areas...

QUALIFYING: "Here we go. One more hot lap, and I bury Nico. Let's start the lap super fast ... ah, crap!" "Now that Lewis is off, I just need to finish this lap, and I got him. Push it through this last ... ah, crap!"

RACE: The expected rain never materialized, which was needed to add a little more excitement at the front. But, there were battles throughout the rest of the field.

TRACK: That's a fun track to watch these cars on. Probably more fun in person.

START: Ericsson and Maldonado jump then stop, thus Raikkonen is balked, and the chain reaction results in Kimi and Alonso having a wild ride. Meanwhile, up front, Rosberg makes the race winning move.

ROSBERG: A brilliant start was all Nico needed, though a late race vibration got him all nervous.

HAMILTON: Beaten fair and square, and sealed his defeat by crossing the blend line.

MERCEDES: Nothing new to see here.

MASSA: Excellent work to hold off Vettel.

VETTEL: His pit crew let him down.

HULKENBERG: Talk about riding a racing high. Wins Le Mans in his debut last week, and then manhandles an inferior car to fifth in qualifying and sixth in the race.

FERRARI: If you are going to replace Kimi, who would you hire? Bottas or Hulkenberg? Tough choice.

MALDONADO: That was one dramatic pass on Verstappen.

VERSTAPPEN: That was one excellent race by Max.

RICCIARDO: We thought it was impossible to wipe off Daniel's smile. Sad that it's gotten this bad.

RED BULL: Team Whining Babies are at it again.

NASR: His race did not live up to his qualifying.

RAIKKONEN: One lucky driver.

ALONSO: One lucky driver. Oh, not for walking away from the scary crash, but for not having to stay in the race only to suffer another ridiculous mechanical DNF.

BUTTON: Speaking of ridiculous mechanical DNFs...

GP2: This was one of the best GP2 feature races in history. Slicing and dicing throughout the field, throughout the race ... and then some. Top class entertainment!

WORD OF THE WEEKEND: Start.

STAT OF THE WEEKEND: 0 -- The number of points Fernando Alonso has halfway through the calendar year.

HISTORICAL STAT OF THE WEEKEND: Before the Austrian GP was on it's second hiatus, a German, Michael Schumacher, won the last two events in 2002 and 2003. Now, another German, Nico Rosberg, has won two in a row, making it four in a row for German drivers. These are the only German victories in the Austrian GP.

QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND: Niki Lauda on Red Bull's, a.k.a. Team Whining Babies, constant quit threat, "All the whining does annoy me."

QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND RUNNERUP: Pastor Maldonado on his wild pass on Verstappen, "It was a bit scary but okay. Good control!"

SCHEDULE: Off to England, where Hamilton can reassert himself at home or Rosberg can throw the gauntlet down.
