1999 Fontana Thoughts
In keeping with the spirit of Greg Moore and his love of auto racing, we
decided to produce the Fontana Thoughts.
Dedicated to Greg Moore (1975-1999) |
RACE: Perhaps like none other in recent memory, this race contrasted the high of the
sport (the greatest championship battle in the history of CART) and the devastating low
this cruel sport is capable of producing.
TRACK: Similar to last year, the Handford Device did not have as great an affect on
the race here as it does at Michigan.
MONTOYA: He did everything he needed to do to become champion. Except be able to
enjoy it.
GANASSI: Four for four. A remarkable record.
FRANCHITTI: A gallant effort, but alas, a minor loss in the grand scheme of things.
FERNANDEZ: Is this man cursed? His first win comes the day Jeff Krosnoff is killed.
His first 500-mile victory comes the day Moore losses his life. It was his wheel that killed
the three spectators at Michigan. Adrian deserves better.
PAPIS: Played the fuel game safe this time, only to be outdone by the gamble of the
eventual winner. Papis seems to know the setup for the Handford Device, and with many variations
to be used next year, he may finally get that first win.
FITTIPALDI: His confidence must be back and most likely looking forward to another
strong season next year.
ANDRETTI: The Andretti 500-mile race luck strikes again.
PRUETT: Not the way to go out, but after his pole, the question is, will he regret
leaving CART and Toyota?
UNSER JR.: A very strong run, considering his 1999 season, to close out his CART
career.
CASTRO-NEVES: He'll end up somewhere next year. And very quickly. That kind of talent
does not remain unemployed very long.
HERTA: Time for a fresh start. However, Bryan really needs to improve his oval
performance, or this will be his last chance.
VITOLO: So close to leading a race. So, so close...
TEAM HOGAN: He may sometimes have had the tact of a bull in a china shop, but there
was no denying Carl's love and dedication to the sport. Here's hoping he someday finds a way
back in.
TOYOTA: Now that they have pulled the coup of the decade in signing up Team Ganassi,
they no longer have anymore excuses.
NEWMAN-HAAS: With a new, improved, more powerful Ford engine and Lola chassis, this team
may be the one to beat in 2000.
QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND: Many could have been picked. We'll go with Max Papis' sentiments,
"We are not here to kill ourselves. We are not here for this."
SCHEDULE: Here's praying to a much, much, much safer 2000 season.
