1998 California Thoughts

TRACK: Interesting that this track did not produce the all out wild drafting affair that the Handford Device did at Michigan. But for those purists who felt Michigan was too NASCAR-like, California had just enough excitement without overdoing it that should appease everyone.

RACE: Typical 500 mile race: the first 400 miles were run to setup the last 100 miles. And oh what a 100 miles they were! The only blemish was the two late yellows that took away some of the anticipation.

RAHAL: Twenty-four victories (fourth CART all time). Eighteen poles (fifth CART all-time). One [real] Indy 500 win. Three CART championships; one of only two drivers to do so. A record 264 starts. Thanks Bobby for the memories.

VASSER: Payback for Michigan.

MOORE: Betcha he would like to trade the US 500 victory for this one. California was worth more.

ZANARDI: One last time we get to see Alex magic -- another great comeback after falling a lap down to be a contender for the win. Now, we'll have to resort back to referring to him as Alessandro.

FERNANDEZ: Talk about an up, down, up weekend.

TOYOTA:Interesting. The Toyota's were not completely blown away on the superspeedway. Did you notice how much trouble Moore had trying to power his way past Alex Barron? Did you notice how well Gordon ran? The Toyota is not there yet, but it is no longer the laughing stock of the dyno.

PACWEST: They finally decided to show up for a race. Too bad it was 18 races too late...

MEIER: Nice flamethrower! But the real question is which was brighter: the fire or the paint job?

ANDRETTI: I can't believe the mistakes Mikey makes for the his experience level.

TRACY: Just when you thought there was no new bonehead move that Paul could possibly come up with, you quickly learn that with Tracy, it's only a matter of time.

POP UP VIDEO: Hate to mention these things again, but when they displayed technical information in them, they were interesting. That is how they should be used, if they keep insisting on polluting the screen with them.

SCHEDULE: Well, look at this way. The off season this year is shorter than it was last year. And we get 20 races in 1999! But ... why ... am ... I ... twitching ... ?
