2000 Detroit Thoughts
TRACK: Passes? At Detroit? Must be spots in my eyes.
RACE: Once again, as long as you ignore Montoya, there was plenty of action elsewhere
in the field.
WINNERS: Seven winners in seven races. Then again, that's helped a lot by Montoya
DNF'ing over half the races.
CASTRONEVES: I really think Helio needs to lighten up a bit...
PENSKE: Yep, Team Penske is definitely back.
PAPIS: Slightly different circumstances this weekend could have seen Max on the top
step.
SERVIA: Now, he's finally showing his stuff.
MONTOYA: Whether he wins or not, you are watching an absolute master at work.
JOURDAIN: A very good run. Very good, indeed.
FITTIPALDI: Cry all you want Christian, that was absolutely, positively, without a
doubt, completely, 100% your fault.
KUROSAWA: What the heck is wrong with this guy?! He's two laps down and throwing
NFL style blocks at the leaders. Put this guy on probation.
TRACY: Maybe Paul should try to figure out a way not to pit during a race.
BRACK: Takes a little while remembering how to run street courses, eh, Kenny.
NAKANO: Needs to attend the Alex Zanardi donut school.
FERNANDEZ: He wins the "well that was a dumb reason to drop out of a race" award.
PATRICK: Expect the stock of screen protector companies to go up.
NUNN: "Hello, Alex? Are you doing anything this weekend?"
START: Who needs those two-by-two starts...
CRAIG: I'm not one of those who jumped on the "dump Andrew Craig" bandwagon in recent
times. I believe Craig did what he was asked to do when he was brought in. However, I also
believe there is a time when change is good. And this is one of those times. Despite that, heed
the warning of Firestone's Al Speyer after he praised the selection of Bobby Rahal, "But this is
a tough, tough job. There are a lot of issues remaining, and they are very complex."
BIZARRE STAT OF THE WEEKEND: Despite absolutely dominating the race until he dropped
out, Montoya did not post the fastest race lap. Nor the second. Not even the third. He got the
fourth fastest lap.
QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND: In the we-hope-the-European-snobs-don't-disown-him category,
Stirling Moss gave his impression of CART while being a guest of Ford at Detroit, "It's the first
time I've ever seen a CART event on site. Of course we watch the CART races all the time on
television -- it's much better racing than ours."
QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND RUNNERUP: In the what-athletes-really-think category, Helio
Castroneves remarked about Montoya's misfortune, "I don't feel sorry for him, because I know how
it feels. I have been in that situation many times."
SCHEDULE: What bonehead allowed the Portland race to be aired on ESPN2?
