1998 Vancouver Thoughts
TRACK: On Thursday, the drivers said it was going to be a great track.
On Saturday, the drivers said the track stinks. I'll settle the score
for them. This track gets the same score as the old track -- an "F" --
in a big red bold font style.
RACE: Mercifully, CART had the two hour time limit rule. Sure Franchitti's
pass on Andretti was a thriller, but this race was a dud.
FRANCHITTI: Fantastic move, and he once again proves that once you break
through with your first victory, there's no stopping you.
ZANARDI: Hail to the champion!! A well deserved and earned championship
even if he is the luckiest SOB in the world.
UNSER: Was that really Al Unser, Jr. running up front? Being competitive?
Didn't he start 22nd?!
BARRON: Admit it all you romantic racing fans. You were all beside
yourselves seeing a Dan Gurney Eagle leading a race. And probably felt
like crying when Alex spun out. Maybe it was too good to be true, but don't
blame Barron. He's still young, and allowed to make a mistake under that
sort of pressure.
PRUETT: Enjoy raking up those points while you can.
HEARN: Ahh, excuse me Bryan, but I'm faster...
RAHAL: Gee guys, thanks for the shower...
MOORE: Is anybody besides me more upset with Greg Moore than Paul Tracy?
Once again, Greg comes barreling into a situation way too fast not
realizing soon enough that there is no way in God's Earth that he is going
to make it through cleanly. Either that, or he just enjoys playing
leap-frog.
VITOLO: There certainly isn't anything I could say that will top Danny
Sullivan's not so veiled remarks.
JONES: Well, this is going to be interesting. PJ to replace Scott Pruett
on the Patrick Team. There are two factions with Jones -- those who believe
he has immense talent but never the car to show it, or those who believe he
has no talent but the name to get him places. Well, next year will be the
moment of truth.
SOSPIRI: So, Sospiri will be driving the Gurney car the next four races.
And rumor has it that Gurney and Arciero-Wells are interested in Kenny Brack.
Yep, the IRL is sure meeting it's goal -- providing young and upcoming
foreign road racers an opportunity to make it to the big leagues. What's
that you say...?
QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND: Dario Franchitti on his win: "It was a great
feeling. The Team KOOL Green guys kind of beat me up when I came into the
victory circle. They're big guys and they were hitting me pretty hard -
they were a bit happy!"
SCHEDULE: Some people say that Laguna Seca really doesn't provide for a
great race. The famed corkscrew overshadows a track where passing is
difficult. Maybe, maybe not. But coming after Vancouver, it looks to me
like it's the best track in the world.
