2001 Long Beach Thoughts
RACE: Interesting that despite no lead changes, there was no running away and hiding during the
green flag periods throughout the field.
QUALIFYING: A real nail biter.
CASTRONEVES: The Fence Man does it again!
DA MATTA: After just two races, it's waaaaaay too early to say this. However, common sense
has never stopped us before. This appears to be da Matta's breakout year.
DE FERRAN: Seven podium finishes in the last ten races. Gil just keeps motoring along.
TRACY: Not quite as dramatic as last year, but still a fine run at the beach.
VASSER: A valid championship contender in a bare car. Someone please explain this to me.
KANAAN: Alex who?
JUNQUEIRA: With all the problems he had early on, it's amazing -- and impressive -- where he finished.
And he showed a lot of speed in the process.
BRACK: It's got to come one of these races. Right?
JOURDAIN: Once again, Michel started the weekend with a bang but ended it with a whimper.
FITTIPALDI: What's the matter, Christian? You missed your old teammate so badly, you had
to paint your car the same color as Michael's?
MORENO: Would it be easier for you if the cars had brake lights?
FERNANDEZ: Have patience, Adrian. Have patience.
ZANARDI: Will the real Alex please stand up?
GARCIA: Not all the Brazilians deserve to be in CART.
CARPENTIER: I think Patrick would love to have a bionic wrist.
QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND: Tony Kanaan after discussing various options and alternatives to the
new qualifying rule, concluded by saying, "The thing is, no matter what, the drivers will always
complain."
QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND RUNNERUP: Alex Tagliani's reaction to Paul Tracy's excuse for hitting
Tags from behind, puncturing his tire, and effectively ruining his race, "After the race, he came to
see me to say he was sorry and that he lost his brakes, but I just don't buy that."
SCHEDULE: Real mixed emotions about Texas. Really mixed. At the root of those mixed emotions
is this tinge of dread.
