2001 Mid-Ohio Thoughts

RACE: CART's version of Groundhog Day.

TRACK: Wider would be better.

CASTRONEVES: Pity Helio if he ever won at a track without a fence.

DE FERRAN: Do not, we repeat, do not win the pole at Mid-Ohio next year.

PENSKE: Funny how accusations of traction control and such have been rampant the past couple years now that Penske is back on top. Nobody pointed fingers two years ago.

CARPENTIER: Patrick hasn't cooled off a bit.

PLAYERS: If they keep this up, they may actually shed their pretender status they've held so long.

KANAAN: Tony, you can jump start your heart now.

MORENO: Inspired by the lack of a new contract?

SERVIA: The comeback drive of the race.

DA MATTA: Cristiano has become the invisible man.

GIDLEY: Aggressive as usual. But this time, too much.

FRANCHITTI: Took one too many looks at Ashley...

JOURDAIN: A rookie mistake.

TEAM RAHAL: They win the Team Green award for 2001.

PAPIS: Did Mad Max just sign his own pink slip?

VASSER: Screwed big time.

FERNANDEZ: It is amazing when drivers get into a situation like this, they never think to shut the engine off.

TAKAGI: Gee, Tora spun off. Again. What a shocker.

FEDEX: Please, for the love of God, retire the "there's a shrimp thing happening in your pocket" commercial. Please!

STAT OF THE WEEKEND: The number of times people asked whether the Penske cars had traction control -- countless.

HISTORICAL FACT OF THE WEEKEND: Castroneves is the 6th driver to win at Mid-Ohio in back to back years (Rahal in 1985-86, Michael Andretti in 1990-91, Emerson Fittipaldi in 1992-93, Al Unser, Jr, in 1994-95, and Alex Zanardi in 1996-97). Interestingly, nobody has won the race three years in a row, and only one driver has won it three times in total (Emmo with his other win in 1988).

QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND: In the put it bluntly category, Jimmy Vasser when asked if anybody can beat the Penske cars, "No!"

QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND RUNNERUP: Gil de Ferran commenting on the Team Rahal situation, "If we ran into one another, we'd both be fired."

SCHEDULE: Will Team Penske continue their domination, or will Road America produce another first time winner?
