Featured Question

If Alex Zanardi fails in his Formula One bid, will that cause irreparable damage to CART's reputation in the worldwide racing community despite Jacques Villeneuve's success? Will it hurt others who seek F1 aspirations?

Purple Bar
Anyone who keeps up with F-1 at all know the Williams car is not nearly up to speed. Alex more than proved himself in CART and given the right ride would do the same in F-1, but I guess you could say that about a lot of drivers. Remember the Michael Andretti disaster in Europe. oooops. The thing I really loath, is the potential for CART to be feeder series for Formula One. As you may have already heard, there's already talk of Dario Franchitti jumping to F-1 in 2001. I have also heard that Zanardi may have the opportunity to re- turn to CART if he's dissaisfied with the Williams team. Speaking of dissatisfied, I wonder how much patience Jacque V. will have?

If Zanardi fails, it will reinforce some of the conventional wisdom that CART is, at best, just a feeder series for F-1. I don't think it will change many minds. CART still has a place. If F-1 were racing in the U.S. now however, CART would be in big trouble. Zanardi's failure may delay Dario Franchitti's entry to F-1 by a year or two. It may sour Greg Moore on the whole idea but because he shows a real oval bias I don't think he has much of a chance in F-1 anyway. It's too early to tell in any case. Not only is the fat lady not singing, she ain't even started her scales. --KEP

No. It may raise a few eyebrows and it may lead the casual fan to think that may be the case, but us diehards all know that you have to run top-of-the-line stuff (and be well-acquainted with it) in order to succeed in Formula One. It shouldn't hurt at all.

Yes, it will hurt the reputation of CART and hurt those who aspire to F1. It is like anything else these days
