The Track
Detroit Doings
1930: Riding mechanic William Berry fatally injured when Doc MacKenzie crashed in practice.
6/32: Race cut short by 17 laps due to rain.
1952: Vukovich lapped entire field.
1953: 73 laps were completed with Allen Heath leading. However, race was stopped due to
bad flip after 51 laps, and scoring reverted back to that lap because of work done on cars during
red flag.
1991: Race halted due to red flag lasting 54:57.131
1992: Race moved from downtown Detroit (a 2.5-mile track) to Belle Isle, a 2.1-mile course.
1996: Race halted five laps short due to two hour limit.
1998: Track reconfigured to 2.346-miles.
2001: Castroneves becomes first repeat winner.
