2007 Portland Atlantic Thoughts
RACES: Two exciting contests featuring flawless standing starts, one in the wet, and one in the dry. Two maiden victories for young Canadian drivers. Awesome!
TRACK: Nothing like Portland in the wet.
THE BIG PICTURE: Vicki O’Conner has done such a superlative job; we’d love to see what she could do with Champ Car.
START: NAP – not a problem, clean starts both times.
WICKENS: Exciting all weekend, "Young Wicki" (as James Hinchcliffe calls him) won his first Atlantic race Saturday and came in a respectable fourth on Sunday.
LACROIX: Many people were saying Kevin deserved an Atlantic ride. Now we know why as he won on Sunday. Brooks Racing is thrilled to have him.
HINCHCLIFFE: Two fantastic drives, two poles, and two second place finishes. And, this man has a great career ahead of him in broadcast journalism when he’s done racing.
MATOS: He did what he was told, which was to go out and earn some points to maintain his commanding points lead, and so Rafa leaves Portland 17 points ahead of his second place teammate James Hinchcliffe.
PERERA: Solid drives both days and a podium finish Sunday – the French driver is kind of the unsung hero of the weekend.
LEWIS: Starting to regain some of his speed from last year and got back on the podium on Saturday.
HILDEBRAND: Starting to show some of that promise.
BOMARITO: Jonathan never really got launched. For someone who has been running at the front since last year, we are bummed for Jonathan.
SCIUTO: Most improved on Saturday. Most unimproved on Sunday.
BREMER: Never a factor.
DE SILVESTRO: Simona has never come close yet to matching her preseason testing speed.
EDWARDS: A step backwards after his impressive showings at the start of the season.
HEISTAND: The official moving chicane of the CCAC.
SELZNICK: Actually finished a race, albeit four laps down.
WORDS OF THE WEEKEND: First win.
STAT OF THE WEEKEND: 1 and 4 -- Ironically, the rain race on Saturday had one full course caution while the dry race on Sunday had four.
HISTORICAL STAT OF THE WEEKEND: This is the first doubleheader in recent years that had two different winners. In 2004 at Portland, Jon Fogarty won both races while Tonis Kasemets did the deed in 2005. At Cleveland in 2005 and 2006, the double winners were Charles Zwolsman and Graham Rahal, respectively.
QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND: Robert Wickens on his first win, "It feels amazing." Kevin Lacroix on his first win, "I think it’s amazing."
QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND RUNNERUP: James Hinchcliffe on seeing his fellow countrymen take both wins at Portland, "I’ve had two other Canadians have their first win in the last two races. I want my turn up top."
SCHEDULE: Onto to Cleveland, and the wild track at Burke Lakefront Airport.
